The Adult Ed group sponsors Sunday morning discussion forums at 9:30am. These cover a wide range of topics, contemporary and historical. Our goal, generally, is to expand our knowledge and understanding of the world of the Spirit, the Kingdom of Heaven here and now.
During the several weeks following Easter we are continuing to read a book we started during Lent: The Word is Very Near You. This invitation to meditative prayer using scripture readings is surpassingly clear, simple, and evocative.
Sometimes we devote a forum session or two to hearing from specialists, knowledgeable in areas of interest to Christians. In this way, we've gotten to know J.S.Bach, Hildegard of Bingen, G.K. Chesterton, Meister Eckhart, Brother Lawrence, and many, many others. We've addressed ourselves to the controversies around fundamentalist doctrines of scripture and the creation stories, to the theory of evolution itself, and to contemporary cinema and literature.
Presentations by our own parishioners have included a study of the art of Russian icons, an overview of Old Testament writings, the Salem Witch scare of the late 17th century, and the 1999 film The Matrix.
In all of these conversations, we are grateful for what we find we can learn from each other, from Scripture, from church history, and from reflecting on the world in which we are planted.
